Peg lateral teeth

before-after-17-L

Peg lateral teeth, or peg lateral incisors, are terms used to describe a condition where the lateral incisors (the second tooth on either side of the front teeth) are undersized, conical and appear smaller than normal. This situation occurs when the permanent lateral incisors do not fully develop. Due to presence of peg lateral incisor, there will be a space between them and the adjacent teeth (this space normally would have been occupied by a fully developed lateral incisor) resulting in smile to appear abnormal.

There are several ways to treat and correct this condition. Porcelain veneers are the most common treatment for peg lateral incisors, and require little or no tooth preparation.  A porcelain shell is simply bonded over the smaller peg laterals making the teeth appear normal in size. If not enough space exists, it can be created by orthodontic treatment.

Causes of Peg Lateral incisors :

There are two primary causes of peg laterals

  1. Genetics:  there seems to be a genetic component to this condition.  Some people with peg laterals have parents who had the same condition.
  2. Developmental anomaly:  Sometimes the teeth just do not form correctly.

Some people are genetically missing the adult lateral incisors so the primary or baby lateral incisors remain in the position of the adult lateral incisors which looks abnormally small in an adult mouth.

How can we treat Peg Laterals :

(1) cosmetic bonding / Build up with tooth-colored materials

(2) Porcelain veneers

(3) Orthodontic treatment may be needed to position these teeth ideally for either of the above two options.  We work with many talented orthodontists to assist us when necessary for a more ideal result for you!

Sometimes the only treatment needed is to re position the peg laterals with orthodontic treatment or a removable appliance.

Oral Hygiene

What do you mean by Oral hygiene?

To have a healthy body, you need a healthy mouth.

Oral hygiene is an important part of a daily routine. It is the practice of keeping one’s mouth clean and free of disease, by regular brushing and cleaning in between the teeth.

It is important oral hygiene is completed on a regular basis, as it can prevent dental disease from occurring.

The most common types of dental disease is dental decay (also known as dental caries), gingivitis and periodontitis.

Regular brushing consists of brushing twice a day after breakfast and before going to bed.

Cleaning in between your teeth is called interdental cleaning and it is equally important as tooth brushing.

This is because a toothbrush cannot reach between your teeth, therefore only cleaning 50% of the surfaces.

There are many tools to clean between the teeth, these include floss, flossettes, interdental brushes, wood sticks and gum picks.

It is generally up to each individual to choose which tool they would prefer to use.

5 Steps to a Flawless Floss

We know we should floss at least once a day, but not everyone knows the right way to do it. Use this step-by-step guide to find out how to properly floss your teeth:-

1.Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand.

2.Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.

3.Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.

4.When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.

5.Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up and down motions. Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth. Don’t forget the back side of your last tooth.

Once you’re finished, throw the floss away. A used piece of floss won’t be as effective and could leave bacteria behind in your mouth.

Health Risks of Poor Oral Health

Your oral health is more important than you might realize. The compartmentalization involved in viewing the mouth separately from the rest of the body must cease because oral health effects general health by causing considerable pain and suffering and in turn the overall wellbeing.

1)Heart disease:- Studies have shown that people with moderate or advanced gum(periodontal)disease are more likely to have cardiovascular disease or heart disease than those with the healthy gums.

2)Lung Disease:- The same bacteria can also travel to the lungs , causing infection or aggravating existing lung conditions.

3)Organ Transplant:-Organ transplant patients defense system functions poorly due to heavy medication. The patient’s mouth must be completely healthy before and after organ transplantation .All infections of dental origin are potentially fatal when the body’s own defense system is suppressed.

4) Diabetes:- There is also a link between diabetes and gum disease .People with diabetes are more susceptible to gum disease. They should get there oral prophylaxis every six months.

5) Pregnancy:-During pregnancy ,hormonal changes may increase the risk of gingivitis ,or inflammation of the gums. Symptoms include tenderness, swelling and bleeding of gums. Without proper care, these problems may become more serious and can lead to gum disease. Some recent research suggests a link between gum disease and pre-term, low-birth-weight babies. Though findings are inconclusive and further research is needed, we do know the preventive dental care during pregnancy improve both oral and overall health and is safe for both mother and child.

6) Children:- Severe caries detracts from children’s quality of life. They experience pain, discomfort, disfigurement, acute and chronic infections, and eating and sleep disruption.

Visiting a dentist regularly can help you maintain your oral health. A dentist’s exam may defect poor nutrition and hygiene, as well as provide clues to  your overall well-being.
